98 Chevy Camaro Z28

The SAM ’98 Camaro is home to the first 500 cubic inch LS engine. SAM was the first to build, dyno, and race this one of a kind monster small block. Designed by ERL, this engine uses sleeves through a deck plate to allow for the massive 4.500” stroke. Wiseco helped with creating the pistons for such a unique combination to give us pump gas friendly power. With a very streetable hydraulic roller cam and LS7 heads, it turned our SuperFlow dyno to 730 horsepower. If that wasn’t enough, a little laughing gas courtesy of Nitrous Oxide Systems was applied to print an impressive 925 horsepower and 905 ft/lbs of torque.

With some changes to the transmission and a little extra tuning, the school’s ’98 Camaro set a new personal best at the 2009 LSX Shootout. The car broke into the 9 second range running 9.96@135 on motor at a weight of 3550lbs and running D.O.T tires. The car was then entered into the NMCA Tremec True Street Class. The students and instructors were very pleased with how well this 100% street legal car ran. Keep an eye out for more improvements and some new E.T.s during next race season.
