2010 Camaro

Team SAM’s newest addition to its collection of record breaking cars is a Victory Red 2010 Camaro 2SS/RS. The new Camaro arrived this summer and came equipped with an LS3 paired with manual transmission. After getting the baseline numbers on the car, 381 horsepower and 377 ft/lbs of torque, the students and instructors began the modifications. The Camaro received a Fastlane Inc. cold air intake, a Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft, American Racing headers, LS3 Chevy heads ported at SAM, and a FAST LSXR 102mm intake manifold. EFI Live was used to tune the PCM and the car put down 470 horsepower on the school’s chassis dyno.

As an official Hot Rod Test Car, the Camaro’s build-up will be featured in Hot Rod Magazine. The car made its debut at the 2009 LSX Shootout in Memphis, TN where it participated in the NMCA Tremec True Street Class and was also selected to be a part of the LSX 2010 Camaro Shootout. Linda Massingill drove the latest SAM project into the 12.70’s @ 114 mph on factory street tires; not an easy task.

After the race in Memphis, the car left for Ohio where it arrived at Shearer Fabrications to get fitted for the custom turbo system. This is the beginning of the Camaro’s transformation to a seven second drag radial car. Currently, the SAM instructors and students are working hard on the new engine for the Camaro, an ERL sleeved 440ci aluminum block.

Be on the lookout for updates on SAM’s first power adder car to join its fleet. You can follow the build-up in Hot Rod Magazine and look for it next year at the 2010 LSX Shootout.
